Making Halloween Cupcakes

If you are a long time viewer of my Youtube Videos, you’ll know by now that I love halloween! It’s arguable my favorite personal holiday (meaning it’s one that I can selfishly enjoy with my friends and without the caveats of relatives and family friends that come with Thanksgiving and Christmas). Consider all the costumes, sweets, scary movies, cool sunny weather, moody halloween lights and of course pumpkins!

Equally, I love baking. I find it incredibly therapeutic and find it to be the perfect stress reliever in between my hectic schedule. Plus I end up with a delicious dessert I can gorge on as comfort food if making it didn’t fulfill it’s purpose. I try to find any opportunity I can to whip up a delicious dessert but these next couple of months are my absolute favorite time of year to experiment with my baking, specifically the decorating aspect of it.

I’m no where near the expertise of recipe testing and truthfully, only in the past couple of years have I began making recipes from scratch. Even then, I often take advantage of boxed mixes (which I attribute to years of watching Semi Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee growing up).

I made these Halloween inspired cupcakes last year using a boxed brownie mix as a base (oops). I struggled to find easy yet colorful and creative Halloween themed frosting ideas that didn’t involve fondant, modeling chocolate, or cake boss level talent. These were super quick and convenient to decorate while still looking really fun and as if I put in a lot of effort. I personally like a bit of variety when I decorate so not everything looks boring and uniform; it has a bit of personality and visual interest.

I used food coloring to dye the white frosting purple and green for the bases and used chocolate frosting for the brown ones. I purchased a jumbo size of variety Halloween sprinkles. From that, I added the pumpkin sprinkles to the green one to make it look like a pumpkin patch. For another one, I sprinkled the black sugar sprinkles on to the chocolate frosted cupcakes and added the white ghosts; I love the way the ghosts look against black base. As for the purple one, I purchased a tube of easy squeeze black piping gel and used that to pipe on the spiders, which happen to be my personal favorite.

You can also watch how I baked and decorated them in this vlog I popped up over on my youtube channel, if you’d like.

As always, thank you for following me along and taking the time to read my rambles. I love and appreciate each and every one of you very much.
